'A Tale of Mani and the Sky Elk' video projection mapping

Goal

To develop a concept and create content for a video mapping show on the facade of the Krasnoyarsk drama theater named after A. S. Pushkin.

On March 8, 2019, a massive festival of light was held in the Krasnoyarsk city center as a part of the opening festives of the XXIX world winter Universiade. Our company worked on the creation of audiovisual content for the projection show ’A Tale of Mani and the Sky Elk’ on the facade of the Krasnoyarsk drama theater. We offered a modern interpretation of the ancient Evenk legend about the origin of the day and night. For this task we used the facade of the theater as a giant projection surface, emplementing building’s architectural features to emphasize the expressive imagery of the ancient tale. The plot of the show was based on a modern interpretation of one of the ancient myths of the indigenous people of Siberia — the Evenks, that tells a story of the abduction of the sun by the sky elk and the reign of darkness on Earth that followed; his pursuit by the brave hunter Mani, ending with the return of light to the people and the transformation of all space hunt participants in Milky Way stars. Folk ornaments, Evenk and shaman drawings and petroglyphs were used in the creation of the 7-minute video mapping show. The combination of 3D computer animation and specially written for the show soundtrack, in which native musical instruments of the Russian North indigenous tribes allowed to create a unique, spectacular event, which was visited by more than 50,000 people. The project was warmly received and had wide publicity in social networks, media and on television. The project was supported by the administration of the city of Krasnoyarsk and the government of the Krasnoyarsk region and produced by us for our client, Sovremennoye Proizvodstvo company.
